The Kintec Group Presents 2024 Winter CME Workshop:

Current Concepts Review on Management of Recalcitrant Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar heel pain is an exceedingly common condition that 1 in 10 Canadians will experience at some point in their lifetime. While 80% of these cases will resolve within 6-months, those patients that don’t improve languish in debilitating pain that interferes with their work and activities of daily living.

This seminar will cover a review of our contemporary understanding of the pathophysiology of ‘plantar fasciitis’, discuss options to exhaust conservative care, and lastly touch on more advanced physiatry-based treatment options for the recalcitrant patient.

Footwear: Is it the missing link in injury prevention for runners?

Scientists and clinicians have been wrestling with the problem of how to prevent running injuries over the past 30+ years. While there have been incremental gains in reducing injury rates throughout this timeframe it still seems like there’s a long way to go before running is less dangerous, injury performance perspective, competitive soccer or even downhill skiing.

Footwear manufacturers have been motivated to positively influence this injury rate through advanced material design and footwear composition with limited success. This injury problem is often considered from the perspective of can running shoes prevent injuries; however, there is value in broadening conversation to consider simply is footwear relevant in the incidence of injury.

Taken from this latter viewpoint, the following presentation discusses footwear’s role as both the cause and cure for running related pain.

Part 2: Operative versus Non-Operative Care for Internal Derangement Injuries of the Knee
The topic of surgical versus conservative management of knee injuries has continued to evolve over time. There have been controversies and pendulum shifts especially over the past 10 years. In this webinar presentation, Dr. Prasad will review the literature and treatment approaches for managing ACL and meniscal injuries, as well as other knee derangements that we see in athletes of all ages.

Speaker:
Dr. Navin Prasad, MSc, MD, MCFP (SEM) is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Sports Medicine at the University of British Columbia and a primary care sports medicine physician at the Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre since 1991.

He has worked extensively in the sports medicine field including being a member of the Core Medical Staff for Team Canada at 4 Olympic Games, 6 Pan American Games, and 3 Commonwealth Games including the 2010 Games in Delhi and the 2014 Games in Glasgow, where he was the Chief Medical Officer for Canada. In 2016 he received the Hind Rattan Award from the Government of India for his work in the field of Sports Medicine.

He has been the Primary Care Team Physician for the B.C. Lions Football Team since 1995 and the Head Team Physician for the Canadian Men’s National Field Hockey Team since 1992.

Bracing and Sports Injuries (Fall 2020)

Over the last 6 months we have seen people flock to outdoor recreation amid COVID restrictions. Canadians have taken up new activities in significant numbers and organized sports have now finally restarted. Whether it is soccer, mountain biking, running, or hiking, these activities all present the risk of injury and potential need for bracing. While most braces restrict the range of motion of an injured joint and promote recovery, there are many different types of braces, each with its own benefit. Whether it is knee OA, a knee ligament injury or Achilles tendinopathy, Kintec specializes in bracing solutions to help with the treatment and recovery of many common injuries. This webinar will dive deeper into the general strategy of bracing, while outlining how new technology has enhanced bracing effectiveness.

Footwear Technology (Summer 2020)

Footwear has long been considered an important component to preventing injuries in runners. For nearly every risk factor for injury there has been a corresponding footwear design to mitigate that risk. Over-pronation, impact loads, and heel strike pattern have each been addressed through the introduction of stabilizing elements (dual-density mid-sole, thermo-plastic shank), shock-absorbing materials, and minimalist designs respectively. Continued innovation in both shoe design and material selection, as well as greater understanding in running-injury epidemiology, motivate the need for continued study on how effective contemporary running footwear can protect its user from injury or pain.

Part 1 of this webinar will highlight the study that took place in Vancouver, BC in 2019 that provided the evidence supporting Nike’s global claim of 52% injury reduction with the React Infinity Run shoe.

Part 2 of this webinar dives deeper in selected functional elements of footwear and how these components that are ostensibly used to improve comfort or performance can also provide a significant therapeutic benefit.

Exhausting Conservative Care Options (Spring 2020)

Chronic mid-foot osteoarthritis, tibialis-posterior dysfunction, adult-acquired flatfoot, acute traumatic orthopaedic injury. Collectively these conditions, and others, contribute to a growing group of patients experiencing chronic foot & ankle pain who languish in our system offering limited options outside of medication and surgery.

The fundamental need for many of these patients is mobility assistance due to mechanical insufficiency secondary to their injury or condition. Advanced pedorthic interventions such as footwear modifications, ankle-foot orthoses, and bespoke orthopaedic footwear are seldom considered, yet are vital non-surgical management options that help regain mobility and manage pain.

This webinar will highlight the nature of selected underlying conditions contributing to chronic foot and ankle pain before going into greater detail on the indications for a selection of advanced pedorthic options available at Kintec.
