Plantar Fasciitis: Symptoms and Solutions

Do your feet hurt when you get out of bed in the morning or at the end of a long day? Do you feel a tingling at the towards the back of your heel? You could have plantar fasciitis! In fact, plantar fasciitis is one of the conditions that we see here the most.

The plantar fascia is the thick tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes creating the arch on the bottom of the foot. If you strain your plantar fascia, it will become weak, swollen, and irritated or inflamed.

Your heel or the bottom of your foot will then hurt when you stand or walk. When the fascia becomes inflamed due to micro-tears, this is the condition we know as plantar fasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis is common in middle-aged people. It also occurs in younger people who are on their feet a lot, like athletes, those that work on their feet a lot, or soldiers. It can happen in one foot or both feet, and not necessarily at the same time.

What causes plantar fasciitis?

The straining of ligaments supporting your arch causes plantar fasciitis. Repeated strain can cause tiny tears in the ligament. These can lead to pain and swelling. This is more likely to happen if you have or are

  • Your feet roll inward too much when you walk (excessive pronation).
  • High arches or flat feet.
  • Walking, standing, or running for long periods of time, especially on hard surfaces.
  • Overweight
  • Wear shoes that don’t fit well or are worn out.
  • Tight Achilles tendons or calf muscles.

For many people, finding properly fitting shoes and insoles or orthotics can relieve their symptoms. For many others, it requires a bit more diligence. Often times, it is a combination of multiple treatment methods over a consistent period of time.
