Medical Advisory Group

The members of the Kintec's Medical Advisory Board:

Ryan Chang, PhD

Dr. Chang is the Head of Research and Development at Kintec.  In 2009, he defended his PhD dissertation at the University of Massachusetts – Amherst, a series of projects which focused on the biomechanics, atrophy and muscle energetics of feet affected by chronic plantar fasciitis.

He received his Bachelors in Human Kinetics at the University of British Columbia, and his Masters from McGill University.  His research interests are: foot mechanics and footwear, repetitive microtrauma injuries and orthotic intervention. He is also a sessional instructor in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of the Fraser Valley.

Tim Derrick, PhD

Tim Derrick, PhD

Dr. Derrick is an Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Iowa State University.  He received his BS and MS degrees at the University of Oregon and his PhD at the University of Massachusetts – Amherst.

His research is focused on ways to improve human health by gaining an understanding of how forces acting on the human body can be modified to reduce the potential for injury or increase the strength of tissues. Specific interests include foot function, running injuries, bone stresses and shoe technology.

Erin Ward, DPM

Dr. Ward graduated from a fellowship in Podiatric Biomechanics, and since then has been very active in the clinic, with instruction and in research. He was a faculty member at the Iowa College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery where he lectured on lower extremity biomechanics. Since 1997, he has practiced podiatric medicine at Central Iowa Foot Clinic, P.C.

He is a co-inventor of the dynamic gait replicator, a cadaveric foot gait system which has provided significant insight to the biomechanics of the stance phase of gait. Dr. Ward is also a two-time recipient of the top award for Podiatric Research by the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association

Jay Cocheba, DPM

Dr. Jay Cocheba

After graduating from Des Moines University with his degree in podiatric medicine, Dr. Cocheba completed a residency in podiatric surgery and traumatology at Broadlawn’s Medical Center in Des Moines, IA.

He then went on to complete a second residency in adult and pediatric reconstructive surgery in Los Angeles, CA. He now practices in Mount Vernon, WA at Skagit Valley Hospital. His professional interests include biomechanics, limb salvage, and pediatrics.

He has a number of publications including that which won him the Gold Stickel Award with Dr. Erin Ward in 2003. He continues work in research both clinical and in the lab. Dr. Cocheba is a co-inventor of the Dynamic Gait Replicator.

He is an associate professor at Midwestern University (Glendale Campus) and functions as visiting lecturer at other universities and conferences. Dr. Cocheba also instructs medical students and residents in podiatric reconstructive surgery.
